A stylish original East German A1 film poster for 80s romcom The Woman in Red, released in the DDR under the title Die Frau in Rot. Designed by Werner Gottsmann, this striking poster captures the glamour and comedy of the film through a bold, fashion-led image: a swirling red dress, red shoes and a dark painterly background, punctuated with bright spots of colour. It is a wonderfully elegant and graphic interpretation, very different from the more familiar photographic publicity used for the film elsewhere. A knockout design with the knockout red dress.
Directed by and starring Gene Wilder, The Woman in Red is a 1984 romantic comedy about a married man who becomes infatuated with a glamorous model after seeing her in a red dress. The film also stars Kelly LeBrock, Charles Grodin and Gilda Radner, and is especially remembered for its music by Stevie Wonder, including the Oscar-winning song I Just Called to Say I Love You. Light, stylish and very much of its decade, the film became one of the memorable romantic comedies of the 1980s.
East German film posters are highly collectable for their distinctive artistic approach to international cinema. DDR poster designers often avoided straightforward star portraits, instead creating symbolic, graphic and sometimes abstract images that captured the mood of a film rather than simply advertising its cast. This poster is a perfect example: the famous red dress becomes the whole visual idea, suggesting desire, fantasy and comic temptation with great economy.
This vintage film poster is sized 22 1/2 x 31 7/8 inches. It will be sent rolled (unframed).
