A striking original Japanese Tatekan 2 sheet film poster for Girl on a Motorcycle, released in 1968. A very cool and rare poster. Tall, dramatic and highly stylish, the poster uses the long vertical format to excellent effect, combining the central image of a leather-clad Marianne Faithfull with bold Japanese typography and strong photographic design. It is a superb example of Japanese poster presentation for European cult cinema.
Girl on a Motorcycle, also known as Naked Under Leather, was directed by Jack Cardiff and stars Marianne Faithfull and Alain Delon. The film follows a young woman who leaves her husband and rides across Europe on a powerful motorcycle, heading towards her lover. Its mix of eroticism, counterculture style, pop psychology and late-1960s fashion made it one of the most distinctive cult films of the period.
Japanese film posters are especially desirable for their unusual formats, vivid typography and distinctive reworking of international film campaigns. The Tatekan format, tall and narrow, creates a dramatic vertical display and often gives the imagery a particularly cinematic rhythm and is one of the rarest formats of the Japanese posters having been initially printed in small runs.
This vintage film poster was printed in two pieces and has been professionally linen-backed. It is sized 19 3/4 x 58 inches (plus a little more with the linen-backing) and will be sent rolled (unframed).
