A beautiful and highly striking original East German A1 film poster for The Color Purple, released in the DDR under the title Die Farbe Lila. Designed by Manfred Anker, the poster is a superb example of East German cinema advertising at its most elegant and symbolic. Rather than using a conventional cast image, Anker creates a bold silhouetted female profile, filled with a star-like texture and set against a clean white background. The small touches of red, turquoise and purple give the design a quiet emotional intensity.
Directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1985, The Color Purple is based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The film follows Celie, a young Black woman in the American South, as she endures hardship, abuse and separation before gradually finding strength, love and her own voice. Starring Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery, it remains one of Spielberg's most powerful dramas and an important work of 1980s American cinema.
East German film posters are especially admired for their imaginative and often minimal interpretations of international films. DDR poster artists frequently moved away from standard Hollywood publicity, instead distilling a film into a single graphic idea. This poster is a wonderful example of that approach: understated, poetic and deeply memorable, it suggests identity, inner life and resilience without needing to show a literal scene from the film.
This vintage film poster is sized 22 1/2 x 31 7/8 inches. It will be sent rolled (unframed).
