Another superb piece of Chat Noir ephemera, this 1896 programme poster uses Henri Rivière's famous black-cat border to turn a practical theatre bill into something instantly decorative.

The mix of dense typography and prowling silhouettes is pure Montmartre: bohemian, busy and full of character. Rivière's simple cat motif still feels incredibly modern more than a century later.
