Les Enfants du Paradis is one of the towering classics of French cinema: romantic, theatrical and completely spellbinding. Directed by Marcel Carné from a screenplay by Jacques Prévert, the film was made during the German occupation of France and released in 1945. Set around the Parisian theatre world of the 1820s and 30s, it follows love, performance, obsession and heartbreak on a gloriously grand scale.
This extremely rare 1955 Polish blue style poster by Julian Palka is a superbly atmospheric response to the film’s theatrical world. The pale, mask-like figure recalls Baptiste, the great mime and Pierrot-inspired character at the heart of Les Enfants du Paradis, holding a single red rose against a deep crimson ground. Rather than selling the film with stars or scenes, Palka distils its romance, performance and heartbreak into one haunting image — graphic, poetic and beautifully strange.
This original movie poster was originally folded (as issued) but has been stored flat a long time so fold barely noticeable. It is sized approx. 23 x 34 inches and will be sent rolled (unframed)
