Superman 1940s Swedish Film Poster, Gösta Åberg

The highlight from our new collection. A knockout piece of early superhero cinema history. This exceptionally rare Swedish stock one-sheet was created for Paramount’s release of the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons in the early 1940s, with the Man of Steel appearing under his Swedish name, Stålmannen.

Gösta Åberg gives Superman serious graphic punch: electric yellow lettering, a deep black ground and a brilliant red-and-teal costume that feels closer to Pop Art than conventional film advertising. The sweeping cape, diagonal speed lines and hand-drawn typography turn the whole poster into one explosive comic-book panel.

Designed for repeated use alongside different Fleischer cartoon programmes, surviving examples are incredibly scarce. Bold, unusual and effortlessly cool, this is a museum-worthy original for collectors of animation, superheroes and landmark Swedish poster design.
